Cobra Kai’s Journey Comes to an End After Six Seasons

A Strong Run on Netflix, But No Season 7

Cobra Kai has had an incredible six-season journey on Netflix, but the series will not be returning for a seventh installment. While multiple factors contributed to its conclusion, some played a more significant role than others.

Before finding its home on Netflix, Cobra Kai originally debuted as a YouTube Premium series. The first two seasons premiered on YouTube Red, but when the platform shut down its scripted original programming, the show was left in limbo. That changed when Netflix acquired it in June 2020, giving Cobra Kai the opportunity to reach a global audience and solidify itself as one of the streaming giant’s most valuable properties.

Since then, the show has consistently gained popularity and critical acclaim, making it even more surprising that it is concluding with season 6.

Cobra Kai Season 6 Was Always Meant to Be the Final Chapter

Unlike many shows that continue for as long as their platform allows, Cobra Kai was given a natural ending, determined by its creators—Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg. Instead of letting Netflix dictate its fate, they chose to conclude the story with season 6 because it felt like the right moment to wrap up its narrative.

Jon Hurwitz confirmed this decision on Twitter, emphasizing that the creative team always wanted to "end Cobra Kai on their own terms" and felt fortunate to have the opportunity to do so. This statement reinforces that the show's conclusion was a carefully planned creative choice rather than a cancellation due to external factors.

Hayden Schlossberg echoed a similar sentiment, explaining that the foundation for the final season was set in season 5. The goal was to bring the younger characters together to form a unified team for the Sekai Tekai tournament, where they would face elite-level opponents. He also mentioned that season 5 deliberately left a few unresolved storylines to build momentum for the concluding chapter.

Why It Makes Sense for Cobra Kai to End With Season 6

Cobra Kai season 5 successfully set the stage for the series’ final arc by resolving most of the conflicts and rivalries among the main characters.

  • Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence’s Feud Ends: The long-standing tension between them was finally put to rest as they realized their differences were not as deep as they once believed.
  • Terry Silver’s Downfall: His unethical tactics and attempts to dominate the All-Valley tournament came to an abrupt end when his students exposed his misdeeds, destroying his reputation.
  • Final Character Arcs: Season 5 also hinted at Johnny Lawrence’s redemption arc as he prepared to become a father again. Meanwhile, John Kreese’s escape from prison set up his last confrontation with past adversaries.

With only a few key storylines left to explore, season 6 was the perfect opportunity to provide a well-rounded and natural conclusion to Cobra Kai's overarching narrative.

The Future: Karate Kid: Legends and Potential Spin-Offs

Although Cobra Kai is ending, the Karate Kid universe is far from over. Fans can look forward to Karate Kid: Legends, set to release on May 30, 2025. While the movie is not a direct continuation of Cobra Kai, it takes place within the same universe and follows its events in the franchise’s timeline.

This film will serve as more of a reboot, featuring the return of Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso alongside Jackie Chan as Mr. Han from the 2010 Karate Kid reboot. Together, they will mentor a new student, Li Fong (played by Ben Wang), potentially paving the way for another movie series.

As for Cobra Kai, its creators have remained tight-lipped about what comes next. However, Jon Hurwitz has confirmed via Twitter that he and the other showrunners are already “actively working” on a spin-off idea, keeping hope alive for more stories set in this beloved universe.
